New dentures will typically fit your mouth very securely as they have been designed specifically for your gums. As time goes on, your gum tissues will change and the denture’s fit will become looser, thus more prone to movement inside your mouth. Having the denture professionally relined every one to two years will keep the denture secure and functional.

Hard Denture Reline
All full dentures should have a hard reline every two years. 360 Dental removes a layer of plastic from the denture’s interior surface and then fills the denture with a putty-like material that conforms to the contours of your mouth, creating an accurate impression. The denture is sent to the lab where it is adjusted to the new shape of your gum tissue. This results in maximum contact between the denture and your mouth.
Soft Denture Reline
Some patients can’t wear ordinary dentures because of tender gums or sore spots. 360 Dental may recommend relining the denture with a material that stays pliable for one to two years before needing replacement. This material is much less likely to give the patient sore spots than the standard hard reline acrylic. Patients experiencing these problems may consider a more permanent solution of implant retained dentures.
Temporary Relines
If dentures have not been serviced in a while, a patient’s gums may be red, swollen, or misshapen. This creates problems in taking impressions for a new hard or soft reline and may lead to a denture that would perpetuate the problem.
A temporary or palliative (medicated) reline material may be recommended to allow the inflammation to subside. This reline makes the denture fit much more tightly and is usually soft and pliable. After a few weeks, the gums return to a more normal state. The patient is then ready for his new denture or hard reline.

Answering your Dental Care Questions
A denture reline involves resurfacing the underside of a denture to make it fit more snugly against the gums. This can improve comfort, stability, and the overall function of the denture.
Over time, your gums and jawbone can change due to factors like natural aging, weight loss, or following tooth extraction. This can cause your dentures to become loose or uncomfortable. Relining adjusts the denture to the new shape of your gums and mouth.
The frequency of relines varies among individuals. On average, dentures might need relining every 1 to2 years, but this can depend on factors like changes in oral tissues, the age of the dentures, and how they’re cared for.
Yes, there are mainly three types:
- Soft Reline: Made of a softer, more comfortable material for tender gums
- Hard Reline: Uses a material similar to the original denture base, offering a firmer fit
- Temporary Reline: Provides a temporary solution to alleviate soreness until a more permanent reline can be done.
Some clinics offer same-day relines, while others may require a day or two, especially if sent to a dental lab. It’s always best to consult with your dental professional about the expected turnaround time.
